100 Time Challenge

Lower Prep have made an excellent start to their new IPC topic 'Time and Place, Earth and Space'.  Children have started to bring in items for our '100 Time Challenge' display.


Annie brought in projector slides showing the Earth from space and NASA rockets taking off.  She also brought a game to practise telling the time and a toy rocket.



Sidney showed us his light-up globe, explaining where the UK was and how to find information such as the population of the world.



Roxi has brought in a range of information texts about our topic.


Eddie shared a fossil that he found on Slatburn beach.  We all wondered just how old it might be!


Evie brought in some photographs and information about an 800-year-old coin that was found in her field by a treasure hunter!


 Flo has shared a super information book about space!

How does water get from the roots to the leaves if a plant?

 Just ask Lower Prep! This week, the children have been thinking carefully at how water moves through the plant.  they completed an experiment to replicate the action, using water, food dye and kitchen roll. See the pictures below: We also looked inside a plant to see what the stem looked like. Lower Prep found that the water is 'sucked up' to the leaves through tubes in the stem called xylem. This is called 'capillary action'.

STEM WEEK - Diverse Places

 As part of our study of diverse places, Lower Prep embarked on a 'Journey to Antarctica.' Children read all about about Bransfield’s journey to Antarctica in 1819-1820, then completed a research task to find out exactly what he would have needed in terms of food, clothing and scientific equipment. Following this, the children identified the journey made from South America to Antarctica on a world map, where they were able to label all of the continents. Finally the children looked into the animal life that could be found in Antarctica and prepared fact files for anyone who may want to visit. A super day of work from all children, well done!
